AMD purchased the company that manufacturers the chips...
But... AMD sells those chips to other companies as well. For example... AMD makes ATI video cards, but so does Sapphire. So does Powercooler. So does XFX. So does VisionTek. So does Gigabyte. All those companies purchase ATI chipsets, and make and sell ATI based video cards. And there are more.
But the chips themselves... they come from AMD now.
